I have been fascinated by the art and act of making prints since i was introduced to screen printing as a twelve year old.
I was a pre teen punk ( Good title for a song!) and i couldn’t believe my luck when my art teacher agreed to let me and my best mate create a couple of T shirts in homage to “The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle” by The Sex Pistols.
In recent years, Wood cuts and Lino cuts have been grabbing my attention.
Lynd Ward was an American artist who was a master of the Wood cut. Eschewing the fine art world Ward chose instead to use his talents to illustrate stories.
Although he provided illustrations for a number of writers he is best known as the creator of a series of what are essentially wordless graphic novels.
This body of work is rarely out of print and is widely available. There is a nice box set of all six that you can pick up on Amazon for a good price: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lynd-Ward-Woodcuts-Library-America/dp/1598530828/ref=pd_sim_b_5
Here is a selection of some of my favourite Lynd Ward images.
